2012 Spring Show Opens June 11

PAA members are gearing up for the one-week Spring Show, which takes place June 11 – 17 at the Penfield Community Center, 1985 Baird Road, Penfield, N.Y.

Last year, 63 members presented 167 paintings, and this year’s show should offer a similar array of works in all media.

The opening reception and awards ceremony will take place 7 –– 9 p.m. Monday, June 11. The show can be viewed 10 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday – Thursday (June 11 – June 14); 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday (June 15); 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday (June 16); 2 – 3 p.m. Sunday (June 17). Show members are on hand at all times to answer questions about the art, much of which will be available for purchase.

The judge for this year’s show is Rochester painter and noted teacher Jeanne Lindsay. She earned her BA from Empire State College (SUNY) and also studied at Duke University and Rochester Institute of Technology. Her work has been selected for numerous national juried exhibits and she has received more than 100 honors and awards including membership in Watercolor USA Honor Society. Her work has been featured three times in American Artist magazine. In Rochester, she is represented by Nan Miller Gallery.

Formed in 1963, the Penfield Art Association today has more than 100 members from throughout the Rochester area. The organization is open to artists of all skill levels and people interested in the two-dimensional visual arts.

Penfield Art Association Winter Show Opens Jan. 30

Recent works in a variety of media will be on display throughout February as the Penfield Art Association presents its 2012 Winter Show in the Community Room at Barnes & Noble, 3349 Monroe Ave., Pittsford, N.Y.

The exhibit is open daily during store hours, 9 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. A reception and awards ceremony will take place 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5. Best of show, six juror awards and six merit awards will be presented.

Chair for the show is Gee Gee Micoli of Honeoye Falls, N.Y. The juror for this year’s show is noted watercolor artist M. Wendy Gwirtzman of Brighton, N.Y.

It seems that the Dolomite Lodge is a favorite spot for our PAA members since we have broken records in attendance for both our holiday party in 2010 and this year’s end of year picnic! Lots of wonderful food and camaraderie! It is really a special group. The new PAA Board for 2011-2012 was voted in and Suzi Zefting-Kuhn officially handed the PAA gavel to new PAA President, Marilyn Nosky.

Congratulations to you all! Our juror was Martine LaPore who has a studio in ARTISANworks on Blossom Rd. Her job was not easy as we had a record breaking 160 paintings in this year’s show!

descended upon Mendon Ponds Park and learned to paint plein air. Painting plein air landscape was the membership’s majority vote for our yearly free to PAA members workshop. This is one of the perks of a PAA membership. Last year it was pastel over a watercolor under-painting with Christine Waara. Who knows what the popular topic or instructor will be next year. Here are what the instructor and one member of the group said about the day:

“I think it was fabulous. the participants were wonderful…. we became a friendly, happy team of painters. They never thought they’d have so much fun on a cloudy day! We were warm and dry. For part of the day it didn’t rain….just beautiful soft colors, no wind, warm temperatures, quiet and solitude….for few folks were in the park. We painted at the shelter on the edge of the overhang to get the ambient light, yet not get wet from the drizzle.”

“It was the most fun I have had in the rain!”
