Artist Bio

I am a third generation artist from a family of artists, cartoonists, calligraphers, and sign painters. I enjoyed art courses in grade school and as elective courses in college. Since 1998, while busy with work and family, I have regularly taken courses and workshops with national artists including Tony Couch, Stephen Quiller, Brienne M Brown, and Gordon Jones, at the MAG Creative Workshop, and with local signature artists . In addition to my instructors, I am inspired by Winslow Homer, John Pike, Ray Ellis, Eric Sloane, and Joseph Raffael. I am active in several art groups and enjoy the energy, joy, and continuous learning that these art communities bring to my life.
I paint in watercolor using images from personal experiences in the outdoors, traveling, and exploring, a lifetime of camping, hiking, and discovery along Coastal America, in the Adirondack Mountains, and the Finger Lakes. When I am working on a painting my hope is that I can capture the beauty and emotions that I experienced in that moment. Over time, my collection of paintings has become a travelogue about these places visited and experiences encountered. My comprehensive sketchbooks are at times a personal diary of thoughts, music, readings, critique, and emotions. I also, enjoy writing about each painting and sharing with family and friends.
My approach to the challenge and mystery of watercolor painting reflects my technical background. I work from personal photos and sketches, with careful planning of the painting process, including value studies, a color plan, composition development, and small trial studies. My final paintings are usually a larger version after 2-3 small watercolor sketches and detailed planning in my sketchbook.
This gallery collection includes many of my favorites, some award winning, that represent my sunset, landscape, maritime, architectural, floral, and abstract paintings.
Since retirement in 2013, I have enjoyed more time to paint. I work in my home studio in East Rochester, paint with a group weekly, and enjoy displaying my art in local shows and galleries.
